371 : Maricopa Boulevard
This map depicts a stretch of suburban commercial landscape in Chandler, Arizona with strip malls, big box stores, parking lots, gas stations, and fast food restaurants rendered in precise detail. Every element is accounted for: the drive-through, parking lot stripes, even turning lanes. Walmart, Fry’s, IKEA, Ross, Staples, In-N-Out, Chevron, Starbucks, and a dozen other stores fill the page in a portrait of an American southwest suburb that feels rather encyclopedic.
Carlos drew this when he was fourteen years old. He noted the map isn’t a true representation of an actual place, but more a projection of his vision for the future. Carlos said he had been making maps since he was ten and architecture was his life. It’s hard to look at this map and doubt him. ๐
