373 : Cape Henlopen
Jeff’s minimal map depicts Delaware Bay and the two capes that form its mouth, Cape Henlopen in Delaware to the south and Cape May in New Jersey to the north. The single line connecting them indicates the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, which has crossed the seventeen miles of bay since 1964 and remains the only direct link between the two shores. The crossing is more than a convenient shortcut. It is an official segment of the US highway system, carrying Route 9 from one shore to the other. This is only one of two US highways that officially incorporate maritime crossings as part of their routes. The other is Route 10 which crosses Lake Michigan by ship connecting Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Ludington, Michigan.
